Engage™ Service - Data and Privacy

Last Updated: May 29, 2015 09:19AM PDT
Recon’s Engage™ service processes, displays and shares data regarding registered users and their activities (each of which is called a “trip”), including data collected by Recon’s heads up display devices - Snow™ and Jet™. This article explains how the Engage™ service collects, uses and discloses data.
Personal Profile Information
     ●     Name
     ●     Gender
     ●     Birth Date
     ●     Height
     ●     Weight
     ●     Friends List
     ●     City
     ●     Email
     ●     Bio

Why do we have it?
The Engage™ service collects users’ personal profile information for various purposes relating to the operation of the Engage™ service. A user’s biographical data (such as birth date, gender, height and weight) is used to calculate more accurate fitness metrics like “calories burned”. A user’s city location serves as the default map area loaded on the user’s Recon device. Other kinds of personal profile information are either required for basic functionality (e.g. email communications) or to enable social features on the Engage platform (e.g. name and friends list).
Where it comes from
A user’s personal profile information is provided by the user, either manually during and after the Engage™ service registration process or by registering for the Engage™ service using the user’s Facebook account (refer to the Engage™ Linked Services - Facebook article for more information).
Who can see it
Engage™ users are able to view the name, city and profile picture (if any) of other Engage™ users, so that they can use that information to find friends.
Trip Data
     ●     Location (Longitude, Latitude, Bearing)
     ●     Elevation
     ●     Temperature
     ●     Speed
     ●     Distance
     ●     Pace
     ●     Calories Burned

     ●     Jump Events
     ●     Sensor Data 2
            ○     Heart Rate
            ○     Speed
            ○     Cadence
            ○     Power
1 – Photos and videos can be pulled from linked services such as Instagram and Facebook. Additionally users can upload their own photos and videos including photos and videos recorded on the Recon Jet™.
2 - Sensors are not currently supported by Snow™ devices. Recon Jet™ supports a variety of sensors.
Why we have it
The principal function of the Engage™ service is to process and display data regarding users’ sports activities (each of which is called a “trip”). Trip data is used solely to maintain a record of a user’s sports activities and to provide performance metrics and overview statistics.
Where it comes from
Recon’s heads up display devices - Recon Jet™ and Snow™ - record trip data when the devices are used. (Please see the Recon Devices - Data and Privacy article for more detailed information.) When trip data is uploaded to the Engage™ service, the trip data is processed by the Engage™ service for more accurate results.
Who it is shared with
A user’s trip data for a trip may be visible to the user’s friends on the Engage™ service and other persons depending on the privacy settings that the user implements for the trip and the user’s profile. (Please see the “Privacy Settings” section below for more details.)
Device Data
     ●     Software Version
     ●     Serial Number
     ●     Model

Why we have it
Device data allows a user to manage multiple Recon heads up display devices from the “devices” page on the Engage™ service. Device data also allows the Engage™ service to deliver software updates and allows the syncing of data from both Uplink™ and mobile Engage™ applications.
Where it comes from
Device data is automatically collected from a Recon heads up display device that is registered to an Engage™ service account.
Who it is shared with
Device data for a Recon heads up display device is available to the user of the Engage™ service who has registered the device to the user’s Engage™ account.
Account Settings
     ●     Measurement Units
     ●     Privacy Settings
            ○     Trip Privacy
            ○     Live Tracking

Account settings for a user’s Engage™ account are configurable by the user using the Engage™ account settings. A user’s Engage™ account settings information is visible to the user only.

Data Security
The Engage™ service utilizes industry standard security protocols (including encryption) to protect the security of data stored by the Engage™ service. Data transmitted to or from the Engage™ service is protected using the SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) protocol.

Privacy Settings
An Engage™ service user can manage the way that the Engage™ service discloses the user’s data by selecting appropriate preferences.
An Engage™ user can select a default setting - either “Public” or “Friends Only”- for the privacy of the user’s trip data, which setting will apply to new trips after the setting is selected. The “Public” setting means that the trip data may be viewed by the public without logging into the Engage™ service. The “Friends Only” setting means that the trip data may be viewed only by the user’s Engage™ friends who are logged into the Engage™ service. An Engage™ user can override the default setting and designate a trip as “Private”, which means that the trip data for the trip may be viewed only by the user.
An Engage™ user can link the user’s Engage™ account to accounts that the user has with certain third party services, and this will result in the sharing of data between the Engage™ service and the third party services. The Engage™ service does not share a user’s data with a third party service unless the user creates a link to the service. (Please refer to the linked services articles for more information.)

Data Retention
An Engage™ user can manually remove a trip from the user’s account. When a trip is removed, all related data and media (e.g. photos/videos, comments, cheers, etc.) are also removed, but certain anonymized information will be retained by the Engage™ service for internal use by Recon for administrative purposes.
Recon will keep an Engage™ user’s profile information for as long as the user’s Engage™ account is active. A user may request the deletion of their Engage™ account by submitting a request through our contact form. The deletion of an Engage™ account is a permanent action that cannot be reversed, and will result in the deletion of all data associated with the account, except that certain anonymized information will be retained by the Engage™ service for internal use by Recon for administrative purposes.
